For instance, using an underscore to separate two distinct keywords in the URL directory name will be interpreted as one word by the search engines and thus not be understandable. Instead a hyphen should be used if such word separation is required on the URL.

Another point is often misunderstood is the use of plural words on URLs. Using the singular form of a keyword does not guarantee ranking for the plural form of the keyword. For example, internet users looking for the keyword 'articles' will primarily get results from URLs using the plural form as opposed to those with the singular form, 'article'. However the plural form of the keyword will be well ranked even on searches based on the singular form of the keyword.

Another key factor is ensuring consistency with the web pages meta description as well as the title of the webpage. Avoid dynamic URLs as these may disrupt your link building efforts. As the dynamic links change, internet users attempting to access your through links on other sites will run into page errors.
